Premium bonded leather reinforcement from Salamander (Germany). 0.4mm natural sheet, ideal for adding structure, reducing stretch, and improving durability in leather goods without adding bulk.
Also known as: Salpa / leather board / bonded leather reinforcement
Salamander Salpa is a premium bonded leather reinforcement made in Germany by Salamander Premium Solutions - the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of leather fibre materials, in production since 1919.
This 0.4mm natural sheet is designed to add structure, reduce stretch, and improve shape retention in leather goods, without adding unnecessary bulk. Glue it to the flesh side of your leather to reinforce bags, wallets, belts, watch straps, and small leather goods.
What This Material Is:
This is not solid leather. Salpa is a bonded leather fibre composite made by shredding high-quality leather offcuts and reconstituting them with vegetable tanning agents, natural rubber, and natural fats. The result is a uniform, stable material that behaves like leather, it accepts adhesive well, cuts cleanly, and moves naturally with your project rather than becoming brittle or cracking like plastic alternatives.
Why Use Salpa Instead of Synthetic Stiffeners?
- Works naturally with leather (no plastic feel)
- Doesn't crack or become brittle over time
- Accepts adhesives extremely well
- Easy to cut, punch, and stitch
- Uniform thickness, no grain inconsistencies
Common Uses:
- Reinforcement: bag bottoms, panels, gussets, wallet interiors, card slots, belt cores
- Anti-stretch backing: thin goat, sheep, or calfskin leather support
- Structured builds: watch straps, notebook covers, clutches, small leather goods
- Prototyping & pattern making: cost-effective alternative to full leather for testing builds and templates

Salamander Salpa Bonded Leather Reinforcement, 0.4mm Natural (Colour), Germany
Is this real leather?
No, it is a bonded leather fibre composite. Real leather offcuts are shredded and reconstituted with vegetable tanning agents, natural rubber, and natural fats. It is used as a reinforcement material, not as a surface leather.
Is this veg tanned or chrome tanned?
Neither, in the traditional sense. The source leather offcuts may include both veg and chrome tanned scraps, but Salamander adds vegetable tanning agents during their own manufacturing process. The final product is classified as bonded leather, not tanned leather.
Can it be stitched?
Yes. It can be punched and stitched alongside leather. At 0.4mm it is thin enough to layer without adding noticeable bulk.
What adhesive works best with Salpa?
Contact cements like Fiebing's Leathercraft Cement and water-based adhesives like Seiwa Ace Bond both work well. Apply a thin, even layer to both surfaces and let it become tacky before bonding.
Can I use this to stiffen thin leather?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses. Glue it to the flesh side of thin goat, sheep, or calfskin to give the leather more body and structure without adding significant weight.
Is it the same as Salpa?
Yes. Salpa is the common industry name for bonded leather reinforcement material. Salamander is the manufacturer, their Salpa products are widely regarded as the benchmark in the category.
Is this OEKO-TEX certified?
Yes. Salamander's bonded leather products hold OEKO-TEX Leather Standard certification (Product Class II - safe for products with direct skin contact).
