How to Use Craft Sha Antique Carving Dye Finish
 
Note: For a high-contrast finish on carved/tooled leather, the use of a resist product is mandatory.
Step 1: Apply Your Resist / Sealer
Apply Fiebing's Pro Resist or diluted Fiebing's Resolene (50/50 with water) evenly over the entire tooled leather surface.
Ensure full coverage to seal all the high spots.
Allow the resist to dry completely (check the resist product's instructions, often 1-2 hours or overnight).
Step 2: Apply the Antique Finish
Using a sheepskin scrap, wool dauber, or soft cloth, apply the Craftsha Antique Carving Dye Finish liberally over the entire piece.
Work the finish in circular motions to ensure it fully penetrates every cut, stamp, and low spot in the leather.
Step 3: Wipe Off Excess
Immediately, or after allowing the antique to sit for 1–5 minutes (test on a scrap for desired darkness), use a clean, slightly damp sponge or soft cloth to wipe the excess finish off the high spots of the leather.
The resist applied in Step 1 will prevent the high spots from staining, leaving a clean, two-tone effect.
Step 4: Final Seal
Allow the antique to dry completely (1-2 hours).
Apply a final top coat of Fiebing's Resolene, Tan Kote, or another clear finish to seal the antique into the recesses and protect the entire piece from wear.
 
Suitable Leather Types (and What to Avoid):
Suitable for Untreated Vegetable Tanned Leather. Specifically designed to highlight detailed leather carving, tooling, stamping, and embossing.
Factory-finished leather, waterproofed leather, lacquered leather, oil leather, and chrome-tanned leather. The antique dye needs an absorbent surface to penetrate the recesses.
